OpenAI Enables Group Communication in ChatGPT
OpenAI has officially begun piloting group chats inside ChatGPT, introducing a new way for users to collaborate directly within the platform. The feature allows multiple participants — along with the AI assistant — to communicate in a shared conversation, making it easier for teams, friends, and project groups to work together in real time.
During the pilot phase, group chats are available on both mobile and web versions of ChatGPT, but only for logged-in users across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. However, access is currently limited to four regions: Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. OpenAI notes that this restricted rollout helps ensure stability before expanding to more countries.
Each group chat can include up to 20 participants, all of whom can join through a simple shareable link. Inside the conversation, the assistant runs on the GPT-5.1 Auto model and supports advanced tools such as search, file and image uploads, image generation, and dictation. These capabilities make collaborative sessions more interactive and productive.
Importantly, ChatGPT’s personal memory system does not function inside group chats, and no new memories are created from group interactions. The creator of the chat has full control over group settings, including the ability to rename the chat, add or remove participants, and mute notifications.
For users under 18, OpenAI has implemented additional restrictions. Content available to minors is limited, and parents or guardians can disable the group chat feature entirely to ensure a safe experience.
This pilot marks a significant step toward transforming ChatGPT from a one-to-one assistant into a collaborative environment capable of supporting group communication and shared tasks.
