Nvidia CEO: “AI has become a million times faster in 10 years”
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that artificial intelligence has improved a million-fold over the past decade. He made this comment while opening London Tech Week alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The two discussed how AI can be integrated into national economic planning, but Huang’s boldest remark was:
"AI has advanced a million times in 10 years. The pace of change is incredible."
He didn’t specify whether he was referring to AI software, such as large language models, or hardware, like Nvidia’s GPUs. Given Nvidia’s background, he likely meant the advancement of AI hardware.
For instance, Nvidia's Blackwell B200 chip delivers 20,000 times higher inference performance than the 2016 Pascal P100. Energy efficiency is also 42,500 times greater per token.
Not only GPUs — today’s AI systems by Nvidia, Microsoft, and xAI are far more capable than a decade ago, especially with advanced large language models.
xAI currently runs an AI supercomputer with 200,000 Hopper GPUs. Elon Musk has plans to scale that to 1 million Blackwell GPUs, making it one of the world’s most powerful AI systems.
Meanwhile, the UK plans to invest £1 billion in AI infrastructure by 2030. Nvidia will also establish a research center focused on robotics, environmental modeling, and material science.
Still, UK’s AI systems remain behind the US. The most powerful one, Isambard-AI, will run on 5,500 Grace Hopper 200 processors.
