Meta has opened external messaging platforms on WhatsApp for users in Europe

Meta is rolling out a new WhatsApp feature in Europe that enables integration with third-party messaging apps. This update, introduced in compliance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), allows WhatsApp users to communicate with supported external platforms without leaving the app.

In the initial phase, the integration supports BirdyChat and Haiket. Users will be able to exchange text messages, photos, videos, voice messages, and files. Group chats are not yet available; they will be added later once partner apps fully meet Meta’s technical requirements.

Meta emphasizes that security remains a top priority. All third-party platforms must use end-to-end encryption at the same level as WhatsApp. The feature will not be enabled automatically — users will have to turn it on manually in Settings and can disable it anytime.

Messages from third-party apps can appear either in a dedicated section or together with regular chats. For now, the feature is available only on the mobile versions of WhatsApp (iOS and Android); support for web and desktop versions will be added later.

According to Meta, the update is designed to comply with DMA rules and create a more open and flexible communication environment. The company also plans to expand the feature set in the future by adding group chat support and additional capabilities.
