OpenAI partners with Shopify to enable shopping via ChatGPT
OpenAI is preparing to collaborate with e-commerce giant Shopify to allow users to purchase products directly within ChatGPT. This means users will be able to shop without ever leaving the chat window.

New code strings found in ChatGPT’s public web version indicate that OpenAI has integrated a native shopping flow into the assistant. The code suggests redirection to a Shopify-hosted checkout page, implying an official partnership rather than a simple affiliate link.

Shopping directly through chat is becoming a reality

With this integration, users will be able to complete purchases without visiting external websites. ChatGPT is thus transforming into a fully-featured shopping assistant. Thanks to Shopify's vast network of sellers, products will be instantly accessible to ChatGPT users without additional integration hassle.

This feature appears alongside other recently added modules like weather and market data. Since the code is already in the production environment, it’s expected the feature will be launched soon.

Competitors are also moving fast: Microsoft launched its Copilot Merchant Program on April 18, allowing merchants to set up storefronts within chat. Meanwhile, Perplexity introduced its "Buy with Pro" feature last November and opened its own seller API. OpenAI has also been testing e-commerce capabilities through its Operator agent, which already handles travel bookings and grocery orders.
