OpenAI has acquired the domain name “Chat.com”

Leading AI company OpenAI has purchased one of the internet’s oldest and most recognized domains, Chat.com, which now redirects to ChatGPT.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the acquisition of Chat.com with a brief, clear statement. While an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the purchase, the price remains undisclosed.

Chat.com now redirects to ChatGPT

Originally registered in September 1996, Chat.com is a well-known domain that has grown in value and popularity partly due to the high demand for the "Chat" keyword in the tech industry. Last year, HubSpot’s co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah purchased Chat.com for an impressive $15.5 million, marking one of the largest domain name sales in history.

In March, Shah hinted that he had sold the domain to an anonymous buyer, sparking speculation. Today, he confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the buyer was OpenAI and implied that he received a stake in OpenAI as part of the deal. However, further details remain confidential.

This move by OpenAI will make ChatGPT more accessible and recognizable to a wider audience.
